The 101: Why The Healthy Young Athlete Podcast Exists…

Did you know there are roughly 60 million young athletes participating in organized sports in the United States? As a result, youth sports is reaching a staggering 20 billion dollar industry. It seems these days everyone wants a stake in young athletes….leading to an explosion of sports specialization, increasing rates of overuse injuries, year round sports participation, and travel teams.

So how can you keep your young athlete healthy and provide the best experience for them while participating in sports? I’m Dr. Mark Halstead, a pediatric sports medicine physician with almost 20 years of experience in caring for young athletes. I am a co-director of the Young Athlete Center at St Louis Children’s Hospital and also direct our Sports Concussion Program. I have also served as an elected member to the Board of Directors for the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and to the executive committee for the Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness for the American Academy of Pediatrics. I am also honored to serve or have served as a team physician for many high schools and colleges in my career and as a team physician or consultant for several professional sports teams.

I decided to develop this podcast as a resource for parents, coaches and even young athletes themselves as a way to have reliable and up to date information on the many issues that our young athletes may be dealing with. The internet can be overwhelming and often not have the most up to date or accurate information and we want to be sure you get reliable information from a trusted expert who works with young athletes on a daily basis.

We will have experts in the field of pediatric sports medicine and those who are heavily involved and invested in the area of young athlete health and safety join us as guests to our podcast. I plan to cover a wide variety of topics such as

Common questions we see from parents and athletes in my clinic

Overuse injuries
Injuries from trauma
Concussions
Broken bones
Problems that may require surgery
Mental health issues
Eating disorders in athletes
Nutritional issues
Sports specialization
Strength training

And that’s only the tip of the iceberg of things we can and will talk about
